Look at the plastic eggs with and without animals in them. Take them out of the basket and investigate them. Talk about the colors and the sounds the animals make. Shake the egg and try to guess what kind of animal is in the egg. Crack open the eggs. Put the animals that come from eggs in the egg carton. Dig in the sand for the animals that come from eggs. Pretend to be one of the animals that you found in an egg.

Everyone Counts: Draw a picture of all the people in your house and take your own census of your household.
Census Word Search: Give your brain a workout solving this Census puzzle.
Census Taker: Be the census taker as you grab a clipboard and take a census of one of the exhibits in the museum to see who is visiting.

BUILDING BRAINSTORM Children's Museum of Houston debuts exciting new design exhibit January 30 – May 23, 2010 HOUSTON (Dec. 7, 2009)— Beginning Sunday, January 30, 2010, at the Childrens Museum of Houston, kids will be able to visit the new Building Brainstorm exhibition—a design studio where you can explore what it’s like to be an architect, designer, and engineer. Plan a dream home or a dog house, build a skyscraper model, find the best arrangement of an apartment model’s rooms and furniture, construct a structure you can crawl through, and much more in the bilingual show. The exhibit introduces you to the design process, including collaborative problem-solving, planning, revisions, and execution. Step inside Building Brainstorm and you’ll find a kid-friendly studio environment inspired by the philosophy and aesthetic of mid-century designers Charles and Ray Eames. DAN PHILLIPS VISITS CMH!
Children's Museum of Houston Welcomes Renowned Reclaimed Materials Homebuilder
February 6

Make houses out of trash! Dan Phillips has been doing just that for about 12 years now. He uses recycled and salvaged materials to build low income houses and he’s going to show us just how he does it.

Phillips will be coming to the Children's Museum of Houston (CMH) to demonstrate how to make flooring using the technique of papier mache! This process involves plywood, hardy board, cement board, heavy duty paper and Elmer’s glue. It is unbelievable!

Recently featured in the New York Times, Phillips is the owner of Phoenix Commotion, a construction company which uses reclaimed materials to build low-income homes. The 64-year-old has built 14 houses in his hometown of Huntsville, of which 80 percent of the materials used were salvaged from construction projects, hauled out of trash heaps or picked up from the side of the road. Phillips has been invited as part of CMH’s debut of Building Brainstorm, an exhibit where you get to become architect, designer and engineer.

Join us for a fun filled day at CMH and learn how you can construct a home for cheaper while saving the environment!

RHYTHMS OF THE HEART WONDERWEEK
The Children's Museum of Houston celebrates author Ashley Bryan’s illustrations
January 28 - February 3

The Children's Museum of Houston is honoring the great storyteller, Ashley Bryan, whose collection of illustrations, Rhythms of the Heart, will be on display from January 14 to March 28, 2010. The Museum will hold hands-on activities and performances in honor of his work during Rhythms of the Heart WonderWeek. Bryan’s illustrations convey the rhythm so eloquently expressed in his writing.

ACTIVITIES:

African Folk Mask: Make an African mask like the ones that inspired Ashley Bryan when illustrating African folk stories.
Get Published: Write and illustrate your own story, written in the form of an old folk tale.
Puzzling Titles: Search out the names of the titles of Ashley Bryan’s books in this puzzle.
Easel Painting: Express your inner artist! Create a still life, portrait, or abstract design in the Alexander Art Academy.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

During your volunteer experience, you have the chance to interact with visitors, assist staff in the action-packed exhibits or help our hard-working Administrative staff. Discovery Squad Program DOWNLOAD APPLICATION Apply today for the 2010 Summer! Deadline is April 26, 2010. The Discovery Squad, our teen volunteer program, are required to be 14 years of age prior to beginning the program and no older than 17 years old. Discovery Squad members are asked to complete a minimum of 75 hours of volunteer service to the Museum during the summer months or throughout the school year. Mirrors are used in several of the defined spaces to add to the child’s learning whether they are on their tummies gazing at themselves in the mirror in a padded area as they play or dancing with scarves in the amphitheater.

The Ball and Pillow Pit is a spot for children and their parents to explore the realm of physical knowledge by rolling, kicking and tossing a variety of balls.

Walking up carefully sized steps and over rippling bumps keeps many a toddler spell-bound on the Meandering Path. Parents walk along side playing peek-a-boo
or conversing with their child as he travels the
well-worn path learning to maneuver around
other tots.

With knobs, switches and door bells to push and turn throughout the exhibit, tots have the opportunity to experience cause and effect their actions.

BTW...Although, it looks yummy, this isn't a real cake. This dummy cake is a foam box decorated with fondant. It was actually pretty difficult to make because the pillars on our facade have a lot of detail.
