Measuring Matter
This series of hands-on experiments will give children an introduction to the using measurement in science investigations such as density, fluorescence, conservation of mass, viscosity, and adhesion.
1. Sink and Float – Visitors will use scientific processes to “sink and float” several cubes made of different materials.
2. Glowing Materials – Visitors will use scientific processes to predict and test which materials will glow under a black light.
3. Comparing the Masses— Visitors will explore the idea of conservation of mass when comparing the masses of items with different shapes and sizes.
4. Viscosity Tubes— Visitors will use scientific processes to predict and test the viscosity of different liquids.
5. Sticky Situations— Visitors will use scientific processes to predict and test the adhesiveness of different types of tapes.

FUNDRED TRANSFER OF BILLS EVENT
Children's Museum of Houston to receive bills of hope for cleaner New Orleans

The Children's Museum of Houston is about to receive an enormous amount of money… all made by local area kids!

FUNDRED is a nationwide project working to support a solution to cleaning the lead-contaminated soil in New Orleans. The project, designed by world renowned, Houston-born artist, Mel Chin, asks visitors to draw original, hand-drawn interpretations of $100 bills.

The current collection drop box, housed at the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Houston (CAMH), will be transferred to the Children's Museum of Houston where it will remain until the Spring of 2010. Then, the FUNDREDS will be collected by an armored truck and delivered to Washington, D.C., where an even exchange of actual funds will be requested for the art currency value.

According to experts, the lead-contaminated soil in New Orleans has caused 30 percent of inner-city children to be affected with lead poisoning.

Artist Mel Chin will be present to deliver the artistic currency from the CAMH to the Children's Museum of Houston.

Children’s Museum of Houston Brings Bouncy Benefit
Aspiring to raise over $750,000 through underwriting and auction

HOUSTON (Sept. 14, 2009) – Prepare yourself for an energetic evening with bubbly beats during the Children's Museum of Houston “Have A Ball” 2009 Gala at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 3. The newly expanded and award-winning Museum will be transformed into a lively ball of fun for a night of excitement. Experience firsthand the groundbreaking exhibits that have brought joy and learning to nearly 40,000 children and their families- just since the new building opened last March! Don’t forget your grown up attire with a child-like attitude.

The event, hosted by chairs Jennifer and Lance Gilliam and Courtney and Bo Hopson, aims to raise more than $575,000 from underwriting and a live-and-silent auction, which will benefit the Museum’s educational exhibits and programs. This funding is vital in maintaining the Museum’s day-to-day operations and in providing a prominent place for children in the community to learn and have fun!

The live-and-silent auction will be led by auction chairs, Ashley L. Wehrly and Jared Kearney. It includes an abundance of unique and exciting items.

More than 500 of the Museum’s generous supporters are expected to enjoy a multi-course feast dished up by Jackson & Co. Following dinner, you can dance the night away with the retro band, The Spazmatics, as they bounce you back to the 80”s.

Tables are available at $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000. Individual tickets may also be purchased for $500 and $1,000. There is also a special offer of four tickets for $2,500. Your donation assists the Museum in its mission of transforming communities through innovative, child-centered learning. Children's Museum of Houston looks into Earth’s scientific wonders

Become a master geologist for a day as the Children's Museum of Houston celebrates Earth Science WonderWeek. Geology is the study of the landscape of our planet and how it has been formed over time. This is your chance to look at some fascinating rocks, see different landforms on a map and everything else that makes our planet’s surface unique.

ACTIVITIES:

Topographical Maps: This map tells you the elevation of the land. Make a topographical map of Texas to take home with you.
Places on the Planet: Latitude and longitude measure locations of cities and countries. Use these measurements to find different cities on the globe.
Investigating Rocks: No two rocks are exactly alike. Identify one by looking at its texture, size and shape.
Earth Week at the Science Station: Celebrate Earth Science Week with activities which encourage you to get away from the TV, turn off the computer, and explore the great outdoors. Find out how geologists discover and explore the world around them using tools, maps, and determination.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

The Aztec Princess: Spotlight Performance. Folks from the Express Theatre have cooked up a spectacular show led by storyteller Epic Dominguez.

The McDonald’s® Halloween Mansion will be open late until 8 p.m. for safe trick-or-treating on Oct. 29, 30 and during Houston’s ultimate Halloween party for kids, the Monster Mash Bash, on Oct. 31!

Children’s Museum of Houston voted Best Museum in Houston by Nickelodeon’s Parents’ Picks Awards 2009

The Children's Museum of Houston (CMH) is a winner amongst local parents. CMH was voted “Best Museum in Houston” by Nickelodeon’s Parents’ Picks Awards 2009. In this nationwide contest, Nickelodeon asked parents to vote in different categories for their favorite local businesses.

CMH was voted the spot that exhibits the coolest kid-friendly culture in town. Among the nominees were: the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Menil Collection, the Health Museum, the Houston Fire Museum, the Art Car Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Voting took place online at parentsconnect.com from May 5 to July 15. Click link for more.

The Children's Museum of Houston doubled in size on March 14, 2009 with an addition of seven state-of-the-art exhibits including: Cyberchase—The Chase Is On!, FlowWorks, Invention Convention, Kidtropolis, USA, Matter Factory, PowerPlay and Tot*Spot. Since the opening, the Museum has already seen over half-a-million visitors.
